A Position Statement for Panel 2: Video representation, coding, indexing
The 1998 International Workshop on Very Low Bitrate Video Coding
Visual representation is concerned with the efficient representation of visual information, fulfilling a certain set of relevant requirements. And since more and more applications keep emerging, more and more requirements keep coming, always challenging the available visual representation solutions. In this moving landscape, what is the role of standard visual representation solutions ? And how sharp is the frontier between coding (for reproduction) and indexing (for identification) ? Are visual representation solutions really evolving towards the emulation of human visual processes ? How much do the currently available visual representation methodologies limit the human capability of seeing, collecting relevant information and taking actions ? How far are we from a world where visual representation technology may transparently provide the human being new worlds to see and retrieve following his needs and wishes?
