Title: Tomographic Reconstruction of Wind Velocity Profiles in Upper Atmosphere

Speaker: Yiyi Huang

Abstract: In this talk, we focus on how to reconstruct wind profiles in the upper atmosphere. We develop the idea of tomographic inversion to reconstruct the two-dimensional wind profiles. By firstly applying the more intuitive least square (LS) algorithm, we show why LS can not be used in our case. Then the regularization algorithms are introduced and much better results are obtained. Since the purpose here is to observe the irregularities in the atmosphere, we test our algorithms when the background winds are disturbed by some waves. The results show that our tomography inversion can detect the features of the wave even with a limited number of observations.
